Most Memorable Moment of the 2000s

Post by Hollywood on Tue Jul 20, 2010 8:45 pm

A whole decade has passed since the turn of the millenium. In that time many things have happened, things that changed the world and way of life. In your opinion, what's the most memorable moment in the past decade?

For me, I'd have to say 9/11. That was a serious matter that is still having effects on our way of life today.

Speaking as someone who's living in NYC, it's September 11th. I think it marked a change for a lot of people. It made people realize that just because we're on American soil, it doesn't mean we're safe. My father was working as a paramedic at the time, and he ended up getting to ground zero not ten minutes after the second tower fell. If his partner had driven just a little faster, if he had taken a different route, if any of a half million things had happened differently, my dad would have been inside the towers when they fell. He'd be dead. Whenever I'm riding the subway, or walking through Times Square, I have to keep my eyes open for suspicious activity. Every time I walk out my door, I realize that I don't know what's gonna happen. I may not be coming home. For many people I know, their life is divided into before and after that day. That's why, to me September 11th, 2001 will be a day that changed the world.

Lot's of huge things happened in the 00's. I think the first, and probably the most major thing to happen was definatley the World trade Centre attacks. I live near an Air Force base, and I remember we had so much going on here, all the way in Australia that day. I can't even begin to imagine how awful it would have been to be in the US, epsecially NYC.

The Asian boxing Day Tsunami was a huge thing too. I'd never heard of a tsunami before, and I was scared to go to the beach for months. I felt so sorry for the people involved.

Hurricane Katrina really impacted on the world, too. I remember one of the TV stations playing Oprah at 7:30 pm one night, because Oprah was broadcasting her show from New Orleans.

I'm not sure how publicised this was around the world, but the 08-09 Black Saturday Bushfires in Australia. I live very, very close to where these fires came, my family almost left. I remember it was immensley hot, and the power went out for several days so we had no air conditioning, or even fans. The only way to cool ourselves was with cold water. I went outside and the sky was a sickening orange colour, my sister had to stay inside because of how smokey it was (she has asthma.) Eventually over 100 people were killed by these fires. It was honestly one of the most awful experiences of my life seeing it, and didn't even get a little bit of what the towns wiped out got. They held a telethon one night, I called up to donate and the only good thing to come out of the fires for me was that when I called, one of my favourite actors answered the phone and took my donation.

Those are the most defining moments of the 00's in my mind. They were the things I'll remember about that decade most.
